this guy was....scott carpenter, one of the original astronauts. heard of him? maybe not. he's not as well known as some of his buddies. his space career took a nosedive after one of his missions. he was one of the first americans to orbit the earth (before apollo 11).from what i've read, he preferred to sightsee more than follow his mission itinerary on his orbital flight. as a result, his mission went all wacky, and he ended up like 1,000 miles off course for his splashdown ('kay, not that far).
nasa didn't like that, and he wasn't given any more missions. he's still cool - all astronauts are cool.
