john glenn, he is cooler than you and me, well, me any way, because he has left the surly bonds of earth, and flew through the heavens. 'kay that was crap, any way.he became famous for his flight during the early years of space flight - then the freaker went back up on the space shuttle when he was, like......80 thousand years old! that is cool. he is the only original astronaut to go back up on the shuttle.
he seems a little stiff in real life, but he's still cool. do you remember the part in 'all the right stuff' that showed him coming back to earth? he was played by ed harris. when he was in re-entry, a warning light showed that his heat shield was failing. that is bad.
that means insta-crispy critter. also, there is a period of black-out as the capsule re-enters the atmosphere when there is no communication between the ground and the dude in the tin can. so no one on the ground could know if he was going to survive until they could see a little crispy critter come floating down into the pacific ocean. not good.
that scene was so cool. a man basically surrounded by the fires of hades. john glenn is cool.
